From the Earth's vantage point in the galaxy, it is nearly impossible to accurately measure the amount of stars in the Milky Way.  Many of the stars are obscured from view from us by interstellar clouds, although it is possible to figure the amount mathematically, using our best estimates for the unknown portions.  Using this method, there are approximately 140 billion to 1 trillion stars in our galaxy.
