Jupiter was imaged on May 18th,
1994, when the giant planet was a distance of 420 million miles from
Earth. The Hubble Space Telescope brings out details in Jupiter's
magnificent cloud belts and zones as small as 200 miles across. This
detailed view is only surpassed by the images from the space probes that
have traveled to Jupiter. The dark spot on the disk of Jupiter is a shadow
of its moon Io. This volcanic moon appears as a orange and yellow disk
just to the upper right of the shadow.
